Recharging Your Creative Battery

It’s the middle of the day, you’ve got a creative project due tomorrow, a mile-long to-do list, and for some reason, your mind can’t focus. There’s just a blank computer screen looking back at you waiting…waiting for you to be the creative genius you are. When you find yourself tapped out of creativity and on the edge of burn out that means your creative battery needs to be recharged ASAP!

To inspire you, our creative studio based in Dallas, Texas got together to share their unique methods for giving their creative batteries a nice jolt. Spoiler alert – most of them require getting away from the computer and doing something else.

In no particular order, here are our top 10 ways to refresh your creativity when you’re feeling burned out:

  1. Look at pretty things – go to a museum, an art gallery, browse Pinterest and Instagram, follow other artists and creatives.
  2. Move around – try working in different places in your house throughout the day or head to a coffee shop for a change of scenery.
  3. Turn on some tunes – listen to your trusty favorites or try something new like French pop music or relaxing spa sounds.
  4. Be a foodie – bake something, try a new recipe, brew some coffee, eat some fruit you’ve never tried before, start a food journal, go on a real lunch break away from your desk and eat your favorite foods.
  5. Get your home office organized -- clean out your email inbox/desktop, reorganize your desk, buy some new fun pens, add some new lighting, rearrange the layout.
  6. Pamper yourself – have a spa day, get your nails done, get a massage, take yourself on a coffee date, just do something for yourself.
  7. Give your pets some love – take a play break, brush their teeth, take them for a walk, try teaching them a new trick, squeeze them, pet them, give them a treat. (note: children can be substituted for pets)
  8. Take a screen break – read a magazine or a book, journal, sit outside and breathe, meditate, try out a coloring book or a craft that you’ve been interested in.
  9. Get moving – take a spin class, do yoga at home, take a dance break, go for a walk around a new neighborhood and do something that doesn’t require sitting.
  10. Discover your passions – make a list of what sparks joy in your life and find ways to make time for those top things every week.
